Duration-neutral yield-curve slope spread

trade 2s/20s steepness with a DV01-weighted SHY vs TLT pair, timed by slope momentum

expected Sharpe 0.3-0.7confidence: medium-lowfree daily data

A steepener/flattener isolates curve *slope* from parallel rate shifts by holding long and short duration legs weighted to equal DV01 (CFA Institute, 2026). Unlike the published curve-carry idea (which picks a single segment by trailing return), this is a duration-neutral long/short spread directionally timed by the slope's own momentum — a different mechanic and risk exposure (pure slope, not level).

Universe

SHY (1-3y) and TLT (20y+) as the two curve legs; use their yield/price spread as the slope proxy.

How it works

Monthly, size a long-SHY / short-TLT (or reverse) pair to roughly equal duration via a fixed DV01 ratio (TLT duration ~6-8x SHY, so ~1 TLT : ~7 SHY notional); go steepener when the 3-6-month slope momentum points to steepening, flattener when it points to flattening, hold 1 month.

Expected performance

Research-derived Sharpe estimate: 0.3-0.7. low-vol relative-value spread; edge is steady but modest, and ETF DV01 neutrality is only approximate).
