Macro-Cycle Factor Rotation

tilt to cyclical factors in expansions, defensive factors in slowdowns, using cross-asset ETF regime proxies

expected Sharpe 0.4–0.8confidence: mediumfree daily data

Factor payoffs are anchored to the business cycle — value and size lead in accelerating growth (BlackRock reports a value information ratio of 0.86 in accelerating-growth regimes vs -1.29 in deteriorating growth), while quality and low-vol lead in slowdowns. Academic cointegration work shows factor prices revert toward levels implied by macro trends, so a cheap macro-state proxy has predictive content. The regime is read entirely from liquid ETFs (no fundamentals feed).

Universe

Offensive factors VLUE / SIZE / SPHB vs defensive factors QUAL / USMV; regime proxies from ETFs — IEF vs SHY (curve slope), HYG vs LQD (credit risk-on), CPER/COPX vs GLD (copper/gold growth signal).

How it works

Monthly, build a 0–3 risk-on score from the trend of curve slope, credit ratio, and copper/gold; hold the offensive factor sleeve when score ≥ 2, the defensive sleeve when ≤ 1; equal-weight within sleeve, hold 1 month.

Expected performance

Research-derived Sharpe estimate: 0.4–0.8.
